What is an Air Source Heat Pump (ASHP)?
An Air Source Heat Pump (ASHP) is a heating system that is a sustainable alternative to your traditional gas or oil boiler that uses a renewable energy source, the air, to heat your home.
The system consists of two units, an outdoor unit that is installed outside of the home, drawing in air even in temperatures as low as -20 degrees celsius and an indoor unit that is connected to heating appliances such as radiators and underfloor heating throughout your home.
The BENEFITS of an ASHP
BENEFIT | WHY? |
---|---|
Environmentally Friendly | Air Source Heat Pumps use a renewable energy source in order to heat your home, the air. The system works by extracting air from outside through the outdoor unit (even when the outside temperature is as low as -20) which is then transferred into heat through compression that can then be used to heat your home |
You become part of a more sustainable future. | By installing an ASHP to heat your home, you are reducing your carbon footprint and contributing to the reduction of gas and oil boilers whilst also aligning with the goals of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and therefore, combatting climate change. |
Cost Efficient | ASHP's have low running costs and with the addition of solar panels on your home, you energy costs can be reduced further as you do not require as much energy from the grid to power your home. |
Energy Efficient | For every 1 unit of energy used by your ASHP, 4 units of energy are produced which can be used to heat your home. |
Durability | ASHP's have a lifespan of at least 20 years which on average, is longer than your traditional gas or oil boiler. Here at Projects4Renewables, we will also give you a 7 year warranty on your ASHP. |
Minimal Noise | It is a common misconception that ASHP's are very noisy but this is not true. The models we have available here at Projects4Renewables make about the same amount of noise as your refrigerator in your house meaning you will not be able to hear it from inside your house. |
How much does an ASHP cost?
Pricing of Air Source Heat Pumps depends on the model and capacity which will be determined upon when the initial survey of your property has been made by one of our specialist and qualified installers.
Because of the environmental benefits of ASHP's, the Government has introduced the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) which offers those looking to go green a grant of £7,500 which can be used to cover a portion of the cost of having an ASHP installed into your home.

What is the installation process of an ASHP?
Pre Installation
Prior to the installation of your Air Source Heat Pump, a qualified and experienced installer will complete the following:
- Onsite Survey
- Suitability Assessment
- Removing any existing heating systems.
Installation
The installation phase will involve the following:
- Installation of indoor and outdoor coil blocks (units).
- Connecting the coil blocks.
This is a relatively uncomplicated process as the heat pump controls and pipe work are similar to traditional boilers.
Post Installation
Now that you have had your new Air Source Heat Pump installed, you can expect the following:
- Finishing (ensuring the ASHP and its surroundings are tidied and appear presentable)
- Maintenance (this is mostly visual e.g. wiping fan blades).

FAQs
Do air source heat pumps work in cold climates?
Yes, a properly installed air source heat pump in a well insulated home will continue to work even if the outdoor temperature drops below 0, in fact air source heat pumps continue to work as normal even if the outdoor temperature drops below -20 degrees celius.
Are air source heat pumps good for the enironment?
In addition to being cost-effective, air source heat pumps are also more energy efficient that your traditional gas, oil or coal boiler. They require less electricity to function which results in less fossil fuels being produced by power plants. Additionally, if you pair your air source heat pump with Solar PV you can either partially or entirely power it from the energy that your own home produces which once again lowers your carbon footprint as well as the cost of your energy bills.
Here at Projects4Renewables, the air source heat pumps we will be installing on your property will produce approximately 3 units of energy for every 1 unit the system uses to operate.
