Explaining the basics of the HUG Scheme UK

As summer comes to an end, you might find yourself worrying about the cost of heating your home as autumn and winter approach.

You’re not on your own - with many homeowners across the UK concerned about keeping their homes warm with current energy prices and the rising cost of living, especially if they live in rural areas without connection to a central gas supply.

However, the good news is that several government incentives for home energy efficiency can help you reduce your monthly energy bills, and contribute to a greener planet.

One of these initiatives is the Home Upgrade Grant (HUG) Scheme UK, which is designed to help homeowners who are off the gas grid improve their homes with energy efficient upgrades.

In this article, we’re going to explain what the HUG Scheme is, discuss the eligibility criteria, the benefits of the scheme, and how to apply.

A closer look at the HUG Scheme UK

The UK government has made a commitment to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

A key part of achieving this goal is to reduce the carbon footprint of homes across the country.

To help make it easier for homeowners to embrace energy-efficient home upgrades, a number of UK home energy efficiency schemes have been introduced, all with different eligibility criteria and areas of focus.

Some of the key schemes include:

  • The ECO4 Scheme
  • The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS)
  • The Great British Insulation Scheme (GBIS)
  • The Home Upgrade Grant Scheme (HUG)

The HUG Scheme UK is specifically targeted at properties that are off the gas grid, and have to rely on more expensive and less efficient methods of heating their homes.

This makes the scheme particularly relevant for properties in rural areas, which have lower-than-average Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) ratings.

The initial HUG Scheme was a large success, and it's now in its second phase, known as HUG2, which runs until March 2025 - so there's still time to take advantage of the scheme.

Who is eligible for the HUG Scheme UK?

There are a number of different eligibility criteria for the HUG scheme.

The initiative is only open to properties located in England - with funding potentially available from other schemes if you live in Scotland or Wales.

Your home must not currently be heated by mains gas, which makes the scheme available to properties using oil, coal, or electricity for their heating systems.

Additionally, the scheme is designed to prioritise improving the energy efficiency of the homes that need it the most, so to be eligible your property should have an EPC rating of D, E, F, or G.

In terms of income, households must either have a combined annual income of less than £36,000, be receiving income-related benefits, or live in a postcode area with high deprivation.

The HUG Scheme UK is open to both homeowners and private tenants - but for rented properties, both the tenant and landlord must give approval for the improvements.

With the HUG Scheme being administered by local authorities, it's important to note that eligibility can vary slightly from area to area.

What does the HUG Scheme UK provide?

If you meet the eligibility criteria for the HUG Scheme, you’re able to access a wide range of energy-saving home improvements - completely free of charge.

The upgrades available under the HUG Scheme UK include:

Insulation upgrades

Having effective insulation is important if you’re going to maintain a comfortable temperature in your home and reduce heat loss.

Under the HUG Scheme UK, you might receive upgrades to your loft, cavity wall, or solid wall insulation.

Ventilation upgrades

Effective ventilation is essential for maintaining good air quality in your home, and preventing issues like damp and mould which can be harmful to you and your family - especially if someone living in the property has existing respiratory issues.

The HUG Scheme UK can provide improvements to your home's ventilation system, to help you achieve a healthier living space.

Air source heat pumps

Air source heat pumps are an efficient, low-carbon alternative to traditional heating systems which extract heat from the outside air to warm your home - even in cold temperatures.

By replacing less efficient heating systems with air source heat pumps, you’re able to significantly reduce your energy consumption and carbon footprint.

Solar panels

Solar panels allow you to generate your own clean electricity, reducing your reliance on the national grid and lowering your energy bills.

Through the HUG Scheme UK, you may be eligible for the installation of a solar panel system to provide a sustainable source of energy for your home.

What are the benefits of the HUG Scheme UK?

The HUG Scheme UK offers a range of advantages that go beyond just reducing your energy bills.

While lower costs are certainly a key benefit, the environmental impact of the HUG Scheme is significant too. By reducing energy consumption and promoting renewable energy sources like solar panels and air source heat pumps, you're actively contributing to the UK's net-zero goals

Another benefit is the increased comfort you’ll have in your home. With better insulation and more efficient heating systems, you'll be able to enjoy a warmer, more comfortable living space.

There are also important health benefits to consider. Improved ventilation and reduced damp and mould can lead to better indoor air quality.

From a property perspective, energy-efficient improvements can increase your home's value and make your home more attractive to future buyers.

But perhaps the most appealing aspect of the HUG Scheme is that all these benefits come at no cost to you. The improvements are provided free of charge, allowing you to enjoy significant upgrades to your home without any financial outlay.

How does the HUG Scheme UK process work?

The HUG Scheme has been designed to be simple for homeowners to access - but it does involve a few steps that may feel daunting to some.

First of all,  you'll need to check if you're eligible by following these steps!

If you meet the eligibility requirements, the next step is to submit an application and you can do it with us!

Once your application is accepted, an assessor will visit your property to conduct an evaluation. We will look at everything from your current heating system to your insulation, and identify where improvements can be made.

After your assessment, we will review the findings and determine which energy-efficient home improvements are eligible for funding under the HUG Scheme UK, and they will confirm exactly which upgrades you'll be receiving.

We’ll help you at every step - from advising on your eligibility, to submitting your application and installing your home improvements.

Not eligible for the HUG Scheme UK? Take a look at some of the other government initiatives for home energy efficiency!

Not every home will be eligible for the HUG scheme.

If you find that your property isn’t eligible, there’s not need to worry - there are other available schemes in the UK that you might qualify for.

The ECO4 Scheme

The Energy Company Obligation (ECO4) scheme is designed to help low-income households improve their home's energy efficiency.

It focuses on upgrading homes with poor energy ratings, offering a range of improvements including insulation, heating system upgrades, and renewable technologies.

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS)

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme offers grants to encourage homeowners to install energy-efficient heating systems, such as heat pumps and biomass boilers.

Homeowners can receive up to £7,500 towards the cost and installation of an air source or ground source heat pump, or £5,000 for a biomass boiler.

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme benefits anyone looking to replace fossil fuel heating systems with more eco-friendly alternatives.

The Great British Insulation Scheme (GBIS)

The Great British Insulation Scheme focuses on improving home insulation across the UK.

It's open to a wider range of households, including both low-income and general households with EPC ratings of D to G.

The scheme covers the installation of various types of insulation, helping to reduce energy bills and heat loss.
